Week 7: Gender & Representation

In Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, Laura Mulvey argues that classic Hollywood films are built around the male gaze, meaning that they’re designed to please a heterosexual male viewer. Women in these films are usually passive, serving as eye candy rather than driving the story, while the men are the active heroes we’re meant to identify with.

Mulvey pulls from Freud, talking about scopophilia (pleasure in looking) and how movies encourage audiences to objectify women. She also points out how female characters often exist in films just to be looked at, reinforcing traditional gender roles. Her solution to this is experimental and feminist cinema that challenges this structure.

The essay had a huge impact, shaping feminist and film studies. But it’s been critiqued for being too rigid; what about female viewers or different kinds of cinema? Even Mulvey herself revisited some of her ideas later on..

Week 6: Subculture & Style

A subculture is a group of people within a larger culture who share different beliefs, interests, or behaviors that set them apart. For example, punk music fans might form a subculture with its own fashion and values, distinct from mainstream society. According to sociologist Sarah Thornton, subcultures often provide a sense of identity and belonging for their members (Thornton, 1995).

From reading through the text, it's clear that Roland Barthes sees wrestling as a grand spectacle, similar to how theatrical performances are conducted, where every gesture is over the top and full of meaning. This is in contrast to boxing, where the story always revolves around fair competition. Wrestling on the other hand is a series of immediate, symbolic moments. The audience enjoys wrestling for its dramatic display of emotions, where every action is designed to be understood instantly, very much like how live performances work, clearly showing the battle between good and evil.

For me personally, I agree with Barthes analysis of wrestling. After watching an old wrestling match in the lecture, it was clear from the outset that it was staged, and their positions/movements made it easy to predict what would happen next. This is very much in stark contrast to boxing, where it's never clear what will happen next. Barthes is right to not class wrestling as a sport; The outcome of the match is too predictable, and the style is over-dramatised.

The item I've picked to analyse is a jacket from H&M that I've owned for a couple of years now. The jacket is Borg fabric, so it keeps me warm, but isn't too thick as to make it bulky or uncomfortable. It also has popper buttons, allowing it to be thrown on when in a rush. Being a neutral cream colour, it can be styled with basically anything, which makes it perfect as a go-to piece of clothing, whether it be a casual or formal outfit.
Being made of 100% virgin polyester, it isn't the most environmentally friendly piece of clothing. Synthetic polyester has a tendency when washed to shed microplastic fibres, which could end up in bodies of water. With polyester being derived from petroleum-based products, it would take hundreds of years to decompose if it ended up in the landfill. I suspect that polyester was chosen however as the material because it has good insulation properties (similar to lambswool), but without the added heft. It is also considerably cheaper to manufacture. Compared to natural fabrics such as cotton, polyester uses considerably less water in production, which balances its CO2 footprint somewhat. Polyester is also water repellent, which whilst the jacket isn't designed to be worn in wet weather, it does actually repel water reasonably well in light rain.
Despite the environmental shortcomings, H&M offers the option to donate end-of-life clothing through their garment collection programme. Additionally, they're also taking strides in the industry to move away from unsustainable materials. Polyester is highly recyclable as a material, and providing it's disposed of correctly at the end of life, its impact on the environment can be reduced considerably.
